The US and the EU consider it necessary to have a renewed policy to guarantee the Western Balkans’ progress in the Euro-Atlantic integration process, as according to them the prospect of this process is in jeopardy. This situation got the attention of a special conference in Washington, where over 100 regional decision-makers from both sides of the Atlantic expressed the need for generating new ideas and policies to be followed in the Balkan region. In this context, it also encourages support for a United States renewed policy in the Balkans in partnership with the European Union. For the Albanian Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati, participant in this conference integration remains a challenge for our own region. Minister Bushati valued the cooperation between both countries and thanked the US official for Americaas support to improve Albaniaas defense capacities, for the assistance in establishing law-enforcing institutions and for helping with the fight against terror, crime and corruption.
Bushati reconfirmed Albaniaas support to President Trumpas initiative for a frontal fight against terror, and reiterated our engagement to contribute with NATO peace-keeping missions in conflicted areas.
According to him, in the case of the Western Balkans, it is still difficult today to talk about a real region, in the conditions where its own countries are positioned in inconsistent attitudes towards integration into certain Euro-Atlantic institutions.
