Gjirokastra Fortress keeps luring foreign tourists

The Castle of Gjirokastra continues to be the most unique tourist attraction for both domestic and foreign visitors. It has welcomed 10,000 visitors for the period January – May 2018, out of the 4700 visitors it had during January – May 2017. The castle is a story related to the city of Gjirokastra and is mentioned for the first time as a town and castle in 1336. However, different historians think that the existence of the stone fortress dates back to an earlier period. This fortress became famous during the Pashallak of Ioannina, when Ali Pasha Tepelena made a number of new constructions or other interventions, giving the castle of Gjirokastra the architectural and construction physiognomy it does have today, writes ATA. Since 1968, the stone stage of Gjirokastra Fortress has hosted instrumentalists, singers and folk dancers in the framework of the Gjirokastra Folk Festival. The Fortress facilities have also been used recently for the organization of concerts, spectacles and various cultural fairs. The stone fortress is also one of the most attractive points in the guides of local and foreign tourist groups visiting the UNESCO protected town of Gjirokastra. Thanks to the historical and architectural values that the stone fortress of Gjirokastra does have, it continues to be the most visited monument by local and foreign tourist groups along their guides and trips to the Gjirokastra area./Klara Ruci/
