The President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, declared today that Albania and Macedonia have all the possibilities to open negotiations next year but should focus on reforms.
Speaking at the Tirana Connectivity Forum, organized by the Institute for Cooperation and Development in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Hanns Seidel Foundation, Meta said that every new step should serve European coexistence.
“Enlargement will take place when our countries are ready. Albania should implement concrete reforms and should have convincing results for citizens and member states. I believe that Albania and Macedonia have all the opportunities to negotiate next year and should concentrate their energies even better on implementing key reforms.
We should be inspired by the philosophy of young people born in peace time and want everything but we should be realistic that we need cooperation, “said the Head of State.
Meta talked about the importance of the Berlin process as an accelerating mechanism of the EU enlargement process. “The EU and NATO enlargement in our region remain irreplaceable and strategic projects for the peace, security and stability of the region.”
