Statkraft Albania has signed an agreement with the Norwegian Ocean Sun AS solar technology development company for the supply of panels with a maximum capacity of 2 MW in the Banja Hydro Power Plant in Albania. The company suggested that the project consists of 4 floating units of 0.5 M each, with a total investment cost of 2.3m Euros. This is the first major commercial contract for the floating solar technology by Ocean Sun. The project will demonstrate the implementation of a technology that has been developed on the basis of Norwegian power of solar PV and marine industry.
“Testing new solar technology for floating solar panels is well matched with Statkraft’s strategy to increase the water, wind, and solar power generation portfolio. If this technology will be successful and potential to be competitive from the perspective of project costs, then this new technology will be expanded in a wider range at other Statkraft locations, ” says Christian Rynning-Tønnesen, Chief Executive Officer of Statkraft A.S.
In December 2018, Statkraft Albania obtained the prior authorization from the Government of Albania for the implementation of the project with floating solar panels in the Banja reservoir, with feed-in-tariff. After receiving final regulatory approval, it is foreseen that the project will be built during 2019/2020.
