Former NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has called on the government and opposition in Albania to ensure that Albania’s image in the EU is right. Scheffer held a conversation with the high level delegation of the Albanian parliament headed by Speaker Gramoz Ruçi, a talk that he said for RTSH was very interesting. While appreciating the fact that the opposition and government were part of the delegation, Scheffer said he was acquainted with Albania’s ambitions in terms of European Integration. Former NATO Secretary General had explained to his interlocutors from Albania that their country “has not an easy way to go, not so much because of Albania, but that there is a strong populist stream in the European Union which is not conducive to new countries to join the European Union. ”
“I encouraged my Albanian friends for their mission, to show the European Union that Albania is very serious with reforms, and the moment must come and should come when Albania receives the political signal from Brussels by the heads of governments and states of European Union, “said Scheffer.
“The enlargement process has not stopped yet and I think that the main ambition of Albanian politicians, the Albanian government and the opposition is to ensure that Albania’s image in the European Union is right. This is my message and I was very happy to have a conversation with friends from Albania, “former NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer told RTSH.
