Prime Minister Edi Rama had a meeting in Brussels with European Union High Representative Federica Mogherini and Jean-Claude Juncker.
At a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that local elections should be held on 30th of June. Important reforms have been undertaken by Albania. 90% of Albanians support reform for the good of citizens and the country. Reforms are not made for the benefit of some institutions, but for the people of Albania to live in a fair society where the rule of law is respected and the state is trustworthy. There is no stronger reason than this to continue this impressive progress. For the EC, based on objective estimates, Albania is ready for the next stage. We therefore asked the EC to open negotiations, but there are some obstacles ahead. Albanian authorities have met the requirements. If we ask a country to do this or that and it meets the set conditions, then we do not have to say ‘NO’. I am in favor of opening negotiations, as Albania has met the requirements, but it is no secret that some countries have some concerns. I have assured Albanian Prime Minister that he should defend every line and statement of our report. The fight against cannabis is an example. The importance of political unity, all parties must engage constructively in democratic institutions. Elections are scheduled for late June. I am so interested that Albania has progress. People cannot be stopped. These elections should be held, if not, they will push the European perspective of Albania. So I am in favor of opening negotiations in the summer or early fall” Juncker said.
