One of the best Albanian boxers, Ahmet Golemi, passed away this morning at the age of 85. The news was announced by his son through social networks.
He has been declared 5 times champion in weightlifting in our country. Golemi will long be remembered for his contribution to boxing until the regime of that time banned it as a sport, but also for the unprecedented punishment during communism for agitation and propaganda.
Ahmet Golemi was one of those who was punished and imprisoned, among others, because he celebrated one of the legendary victories of Cassius Clay, that against George Foreman in 1974, in Kinshasa, Congo.
In 1979 he was sentenced to 5 years in prison. After the 90's he is remembered for commenting on boxing matches and his resounding voice, and being undoubtedly the best boxing commentator in the country, he deserved the "Grand Master" award by the president.
Through a message, the head of state emphasizes that Golemi was the pioneer of boxing, while adding that he will remain a "university" for generations of young Albanian athletes.
