The head of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, in his speech held during the Conference "Costs of Democracy II" said that today we have the conditions to hold high quality elections.
"We Albanian political parties will manage to hold elections with higher standards than the previous ones", said Balla, among others.
Also present at this conference were the US Ambassador to Tirana Yuri Kim, and the British Ambassador Duncan Norman, who in their speech demanded transparency and combating the phenomena of vote-buying and voters' intimidation.
"The holding of free and fair elections is a fundamental condition for a healthy democracy. Despite the difficult conditions from the pandemic, I would like to underline the importance of a full commitment of the parties in respect of the measures set by the Technical Committee. I stressed it because I notice a tendency of not all actors to be contributors in such a situation," Balla said adding that the SP has expressed and expresses its clear will to contribute to elections with standards and inclusiveness and accountability are principles that the SP does have.
"Venice's opinion has underlined that the handing over of mandates by the opposition goes against the European heritage. As we have said, the current reform is not what the citizens would have expected, but it is an important step to guarantee free and democratic elections. We express our commitment to modernize the process. I want to emphasize the need for transparency of funding, even for political parties, but the transparency of the election campaign is of great importance.
I want to emphasize the importance of two elements of the upcoming electoral reform:
First, the need to depoliticize Election Commissions
Second, full financial transparency of the campaign
In the new conditions we have a healthier basis for conducting high quality elections. We, the Albanian political parties, will manage to hold elections with higher standards, tahn the previous ones. I want to reiterate the request and appeal to continue to work intensively to guarantee the vote of Albanians living outside the territory of Albania. I am sure that on April 25, those who will win the most are the Albanians and Albania ", said Balla.
