Banana imports in 2020 reached another historic record. According to official data from Customs are 27 million kilograms (27 thousand tons) of imported bananas, which means that per capita consumption is approximately 10 kilograms (population number 2.8 million inhabitants). Referring to customs figures, imports in value for 2020 were $ 22.3 million.
Compared to 2019, imports in quantity and value have doubled, while if we do an analysis of figures for the last five years, it turns out that this is the year with the highest amount of imports followed by 2016, when imports were above 22 million kilograms.
What stands out for Albania's banana imports is the market where it is supplied. The latter has undergone various dynamics from 2016 onwards. First, in 2016 imports were made mostly from Ecuador and less from Colombia and Mexico. At least 77 percent of imports came from Ecuador.
Then in 2017 and 2018, Mexico went off the map of imports and only Colombia and Ecuador still remained. In 2019 and 2020, imports were made only from Ecuador, completely narrowing the map of the countries where bananas are obtained.
In 2020, our country recorded its historic record of exports despite the pandemic situation, while since 2021 at least for its first months it has recorded a decline in exports to several key markets. In 2020, exports consisted of 380 million boxes, which compared to a year ago marks an increase in the value of exports by 15 percent and in volume by 7 percent.
