Three new banknotes, one of which has not been circulated in our country before, will be launched in the market this year. Specifically, according to the Bank of Albania, by the end of 2021, a new denomination of 10 thousand lek will appear on the market, which is in circulation for the first time and its appearance has not been made public yet, as regards the material or elements it will hold. Also, new denominations of 1 thousand lekë and 2 thousand lekë will be released on the market, which have been presented with all the security elements they will have.
In 2022 the last denomination of 500 Lekë will be issued, while 200 and 5000 Lekë were issued in circulation on September 30, 2019. The new series of banknotes has been produced with the latest technologies in the field of production and security elements of banknotes, in order to make them safer, making it harder for counterfeiters.
All denominations of the old series of Albanian banknotes and coins, except the 2000 Lekë one, were approved in 1995 and put into circulation in 1996. Meanwhile, in 2008, the 2000 Lekë banknote was added to the series and at the end of 2011, the legal rate for the 100 Lekë banknote was completed. All three banknotes were scheduled to be issued in 2020, but as a result of the pandemic all deadlines were postponed for this year, as according to the Bank of Albania COVID-19 suspended the work for the production of banknotes. The central bank also says that during the process there may be technical difficulties that could delay the process again.
