The non-setting of a date for the first intergovernmental conference for Albania and North Macedonia, the Prime Minister of our eastern neighbor Zoran Zaev considers Albanians'penalization as unfair.
During an interview for "Deutche Welle" Zaev stressed that Albania can not remain hostage to the conflict and that he wishes Albanians success.
"Every state deserves to be judged by its results. I also really wish good luck to our western neighbor, Albania, to continue on that path if Bulgaria continues to block the process. Our neighbor deserves to continue on its path to the European Union and it is not fair that the process be linked to other countries. I believe that it is better for the two countries to be treated separately," Zaev said.
This is the first time Zaev has openly declared his position that the two countries be divided. He had previously said that the decision is very dishonest for both countries, but above all it is very dishonest for Albania.
We recall that from the decision of the European Council for Albania there was no opposition from the 27 member states, but the obstacle this time became North Macedonia after the veto imposed by Bulgaria. Unlike previous conferences, Albania within the last two years managed to overcome the skepticism of some member states who considered that Albania did not meet the conditions for the opening of membership negotiations, but this time it was a victim of the problems of North Macedonia.
