The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has published the latest report, ranking Albania as the first in the region in terms of vegetable production.
According to FAO, Albania has produced a total of 942.2 thousand tons of vegetables, leaving behind Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Northern Macedonia.
The report states that the largest amount of agricultural products is dominated by tomatoes, which last year farmers produced over 299 thousand tons, while it does not lag behind the production of other products such as melons.
In the region, the first place for fruit production is led by Serbia with 1.8 million tons of fruit produced a year ago, and according to FAO it is followed by Albania with 810.7 thousand tons.
The agricultural sector has a significant impact on the country's economy. Its share increased significantly especially last year to 19.3% of Gross Domestic Product, also as a result of the sharp decline suffered by other sectors services and trade due to the pandemic.
INSTAT data show that during the period January-February sales of agricultural products increased by 23% compared to 2020, while the largest expansion of exports was recorded by vegetables, fruits and vegetables and medicinal plants.
