Food and home care keep inflation in positive territory, up 1.2% in March

The pandemic has focused consumption on food and home care, in the absence of free movement.

This behavior is reflected in inflation, which in March increased by 1.2%, a year ago this change was 2.1%. The monthly change of the consumer price index in the month of March 2021, compared to February 2021 is 0.7%.

According to INSTAT data, the annual price increase in March was mainly influenced by the group "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" by +0.96 percentage points, followed by the group "Furniture, home appliances and home maintenance" by +0.15 percentage points.

Prices of the "Communication" group have contributed +0.07 percentage points. Prices of the group "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" have contributed +0.05 percentage points. Prices of the group "Hotels, cafes and restaurants" have contributed +0.04 percentage points.

Prices of the group "Miscellaneous goods and services" have contributed +0.03 percentage points. Prices of the group "Health" have contributed with +0.02 percentage points. The prices of the groups "Clothing and footwear" and "Rent, water, fuel and energy" have contributed +0.01 points each. Prices of the group "Transport" have contributed with -0.10 percentage points.

Compared to March 2020, the largest increase in prices is observed in the group "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" by 3.1%, followed by the groups "Furniture, home appliances and home maintenance" and "Communication" by 2.2% each, "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" by 1.3%, "Hotels, cafes and restaurants" by 1.1%, "Health" by 0.7%, "Miscellaneous goods and services" by 0.5%, Clothing and shoes ”with 0.2%,“ Rent, water, fuel and energy ”and“ Entertainment and culture ”with 0.1% each.

On the other hand, the prices of the group "Transport" decreased by 1.6%. Within the food group, the prices of the subgroup "fruit" increased by 7.0%, followed by the subgroups "oils and fats" by 5.3%, "milk, cheese and eggs" by 3.5%, "fish" by 3 , 2%, "bread and cereals" with 2.5%, "meat" with 1.5%, "sugar, jam, honey, chocolate, and cakes" with 1.1%, etc.

Prices of the group "Food and non-alcoholic beverages" increased by 1.6%, followed by the groups "Communication" by 1.4%, "Clothing and footwear" by 0.3%, "Furniture, home appliances and home maintenance" and "Transport" with 0.2% each, "Alcoholic beverages and tobacco" with 0.1%. On the other hand, the prices of the group "Entertainment and culture" decreased by 0.4%, followed by the groups "Various goods and services" by 0.2% and "Health" by 0.1%.
