German Foreign Minister Michael Roth had a meeting with the leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha highlighting that as regards the elections of April 25, he trusts the OSCE / OHDIR report, calling it an impartial institution.
He said that the role of the opposition is very important in a democratic society and wished that the disagreement between the opposition and the majority in our country be minimized. Roth also spoke in favor of the country's EU membership, saying negotiations could begin soon.
"I would like to thank you for your friendship, Mr. Basha, a visit to Albania would mean not only a meeting with the government but also those of the opposition and civil society representatives. Of course, all criticisms that will be addressed in this regard should be clarified and this should be done through institutions. We trust the reports of OHDIR, which is independent. I agree with Basha that Albania's future is in the EU and nowhere else. The successfulness depends not only on the government, but also on Parliament and the opposition.
I hope that from the debates of the past, a fairer approach will be found between the parties. I have been in active politics for 23 years, for eight years in government, I have been in both opposition and government, these elements are important in a state. We are not enemies, but adversaries. The EC has carefully assessed whether Albania's conditions for the opening of negotiations and the launch of the First Intergovernmental Conference have been met.
We very much hope that on June 22, the EC will arrive at the opening of negotiations and the first accession conference, we thank the Portuguese presidency in this process. You all know that this is an important step towards the EU, it will be a long way, Germany will support Albania in this direction, the opening of negotiations does not mean that all conditions have been met, but that Albania has a guaranteed opening for membership ", said Roth.
