Interest in medicinal plants that are produced and cultivated in Albania is growing every year and more. According to INSTAT data, the production of medicinal plants in the country has reached a record since 2016, as in the pandemic in the country were produced 14.4 thousand tons, from 12.9 thousand tons that was last year.
The pandemic did not affect this sector because the activity of the agricultural sector was not stopped at any moment, according to the representative of the association of producers of essences and Medicinal Plants of Albania Xhevit Hysenaj.
Medicinal plants such as sage or oregano have the US and Turkey as their main destinations.
"Total exports are mainly to Europe, but for special plants like sage are the United States of America. Germany is one of the countries that receives the most from Albania. The main plants that occupy the largest share in exports are sage and oregano. Sherbela is destined for the USA, while oregano is mostly exported to Turkey", affirmed Hysenaj.
Shkodra is in first place for the highest production volume with 10.3 thousand tons of medicinal plants, followed by Berati with 1.1 thousand tons, then Elbasan and Gjirokastra for the highest production of medicinal plants.
