European Union officials have announced that a meeting of the heads of Kosovo and Serbia negotiating groups, Besnik Bislimi and Petar Petkovic, is expected to be held in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss the way out of the situation created after Kosovo's decision to implement the measure of reciprocity for car license plates with Serbia.
A spokesman for the US embassy said the meeting was expected to be attended by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Southern and Central Europe Gabriel Escobar.
"We are pleased that Serbia and Kosovo will send representatives to Brussels this week for discussions and encourage both sides to re-engage openly, seriously and promptly in the process," the embassy spokesman said.
Serbian protesters have blocked the border crossings in Jarinje and Brnjak fornine days in succession. The situation at the border is still tense and the Serbian army or Kosovo special forces refuse to withdraw from their positions. Meanwhile, KFOR forces have been deployed in the area, whose helicopters yesterday flew over Jarinje and Brnjak on two occasions.
