Maas: Negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia will be opened within this year

During the virtual meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Berlin Process, which is this year hosted by the initiator of the process, Germany, the country’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that he did not believe that the First Intergovernmental Conferences on Albania and North Macedonia's EU membership would open during the Portuguese EU presidency. He called the current efforts of Portugal as the current EU chair to pass the settlement of the disputes between North Macedonia and Bulgaria in the bilateral plan as a "good foundation to achieve the opening of the first intergovernmental conference with these two countries within the Slovenian presidency, in the second half of this year.

The German Foreign Minister also said that if the countries of the Western Balkans meet the required conditions, then we have no reason to hesitate to start negotiations. Maas chaired a virtual session of the Foreign Ministers' Conference in the framework of the Berlin Process on Tuesday morning, thus preparing the last summit of this format, which will take place virtually, on July 5, under the chairmanship of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In addition to the Foreign Ministers of the Western Balkan countries, the conference was also attended by the Foreign Ministers of the member countries of the Berlin Process, as well as representatives of the initiatives resulting from this process.
