"We are not a perfect region, but we are doing our best even in the midst of imperfection. As a first step, we as the RCC will facilitate a comprehensive regional agreement on ID card movement.

Our trade relations in the region can no longer function as they once did, as a business. "We need to have a common market, for business to be conducted freely, borders to be kept open for the circulation of goods and medicines 24/7, we need digital services to serve people, we need innovations", said Majlinda Bregu, Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) at the Berlin Process Meeting of Interior Ministers, which focused on free movement with the ID Cards of the six Western Balkan economies (BP6), held online today.

"There is no common market without freedom of movement. We can not accelerate trade without removing obstacles to ensure the free movement of businessmen, drivers and citizens. The 6 countries of the Western Balkans have shown that they overcame political rhetoric and the green corridor initiative was a good example. But freedom of movement deserves greater commitment than merely reactive and ad hoc (partial) solutions. As a first and most basic step, we must allow citizens to be able to travel with an Identity Card. We are committed to making this a reality, as one of the key outcomes of the new 2021-2024 Common Regional Action Plan document and we are working hard to make this a success story told by leaders at the Sofia Summit in November ", added Bregu.

Meeting of the Ministers of Interior of the Berlin Process entitled "National, Cross-Border and Human Security in a Pandemic Time: Strategy, Coordination and Synergy between the EU and the Western Balkans", organized by Bulgaria and North Macedonia, within the Joint Presidency in the Berlin 2020 Process and with the repeated support of Western Balkan (WB) leaders to enhance regional cooperation aimed at producing concrete results for all citizens throughout the region".

The discussion on "Facilitated Movement between 6 Western Balkan Countries with ID Cards" was chaired by Oliver Spasovski, Minister of Interior of North Macedonia, assisted by the Secretary General of the RCC and the Ministers of Interior of the 6 Western Balkan countries .

The Common Regional Market is part of the region-dominated agenda, supported by the European Commission (EC) focused on linking the economies of the Western Balkans through the free movement of people, goods, services and capital, digital space, industry, space investment and innovation and the green agenda. The RCC is in this process together with the EU, the governments of the region, CEFTA and partners in the advanced stage of preparation, developing the Action Plan which is expected to be approved in early November, at the Sofia Summit in the Western Balkans.
