Meta receives Italian Foreign Minister: Gratitude for the assistance provided after the earthquake and during the pandemic

The President of the Republic, Ilir Meta received today in a meeting the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, Luigi Di Maio.

 The Head of State Ilir Meta expressed his deep gratitude for the immediate assistance provided by Italy in the search and rescue operations after the earthquake of November 26, 2019 and the contribution to cope with the consequences, especially for the reconstruction of the affected areas and their rehabilitation.

President Meta thanked for sending Italian specialists to Albania to cope with the COVID-19 situation and praised the sending of Albanian nurses to Italy in its worst pandemic situation.

President Meta also praised the continuous support that Italy has given to Albania over the years in the Euro-Atlantic integration processes.

"We appreciate the proactive role of Italy in supporting Albania's European perspective and its continued commitment to improve the integration of our country and the Western Balkans as a whole into the European Union", - underlined President Meta, adding that challenges lie ahead such as the necessary fulfillment of the conditions for the functioning of a democratic state: free and fair elections, the functioning of the Constitutional and Supreme Court, freedom of the media,etc. "

Assessing the fact that Italy remains one of the main trading partners of Albania, the Head of State requested a greater presence of serious Italian investors in strategic sectors of the Albanian economy.

"A strong bridge of cooperation between our countries," said President Meta, "are also the Arbëresh community and the Albanian emigration to Italy. Therefore, I encourage the joint growth of efforts to keep alive the rich Albanian language, culture and traditions in the neighboring country. "
