Strike in Rinas/ Minister Peleshi: National security threatened, US-NATO 'Defender 21' exercise being violated

Yesterday, national security was jeopardized by what happened in Rinas Airport. The statement was issued this morning by the Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi.Peleshi said that the army is at the airport to ensure security.

"We are there, we are an integral part, we guarantee the preservation of its perimeter, there is a truth that vigilance has been increased, it has increased because the airport has been violated in its functionality by the strike of controllers, in the wake of their salaries cut due to pandemic. It is unacceptable that the claims undermine the functionality of our only airport. That is why you saw yesterday our Armed Forces that increased control in Rinas. There are some specific licenses for specific controllers that the military does not have and it is not about taking control of the tower from the military, but simply about maintaining it at a time when there is a threat to national security. "Yesterday an important contingent of vaccines would have arrived, there are other emergencies that are caused, there are other problems, we are members of NATO", declared Peleshi!

He said that the military training "Defender 21" is put in danger with what happened. Rinas Airport is the only gate from where troops will be deployed as part of the "Defender 21" exercise. It will be the biggest exercise of its kind and it should come out successful. Our role in the Balkans is indisputable as a country that influences through the presence of Albanians in many countries, but also our position. The West is the word that should guide us and this drill has a role to play in this regard. Violation of training is unacceptable. We had contacts with NATO member countries, we have guaranteed that we will do everything to resume work at the airport and not to violate this mission ", said among others Peleshi.
