Summer season, figures and facts

The tourist season until the end of June has been successful, according to official figures. This means that the number of visitors to hotels and accommodation facilities has increased 3.9 times in the second quarter of this year, compared to the same period a year ago. According to data published by INSTAT, for the use of the capacities of accommodation structures and hotels in the tourism sector, during the second quarter of 2021, the number of tourists only in accommodation structures increased by about 2.4 times.

Preliminary indicators for July certainly speak of increasing figures for tourist accommodation, but they have not yet been officially announced.

It is learned that only from August 1-15, 859,316 foreign citizens have entered, which is 4.5% more than the same period of 2019.

On the other hand, there are still no specific figures for tourism revenues for this period. Revenues from VAT collected (gross), was realized in the amount of ALL 31.7 billion, 7.2 billion more than the 7-month 2020, as well as 2.8 billion more than the VAT plan to be collected in the 7 months 2021. The largest contribution compared to the 7 months of 2020 are the trade, construction and manufacturing sectors. From the analysis of profit tax by sectors, the construction sector increases by 44% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The Albanian government has reduced VAT on accommodation facilities in tourism, from 20% to 6%, in line with the political program aimed at promoting the development of the tourism sector, increasing competitiveness and economic development. Currently 22 EU member states apply a reduced VAT rate for hotel accommodation and 20 of them apply a rate of less than 10%. In fiscal terms it is expected to be accompanied by massive voluntary formalization. Revenues from tourism exceeded 1.5 billion euros, just two years ago, while evasion in this sector in revenue and employment continues to be a concern for fiscal authorities.
