Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, had a virtual meeting with the Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi. Minister Xhacka expressed her appriciation for then role that commissioner Varhelyi as regards the EU enlargement and the contribution EU has rendered to Albania in the wake of the earthquake and during the pandemics of 2020.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Xhaçka reiterated that Albania has accomplished its duties before the first Intergovernmental Conference by informing the Commissioner about the establishment of the Constitutional Court and the implementation of the electoral reform in line with the recommendations of the OSCE / ODIHR.
Minister Xhaçka assessed the positive decision of the Council of March 2020 for the opening of membership negotiations with Albania as historic and requested that during 2021, it is possible to approve the negotiating framework for Albania and hold the first Intergovernmental Conference as soon as possible.
The Commissioner for Enlargement of the European Union, Oliver Varhelyi congratulated Xhacka on her appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs and focused on Albania's progress in the EU agenda and perspective for holding the first intergovernmental conference.
"We talked about the fight against COVID-19. The EU stands near the Western Balkans. I see a fruitful cooperation,"Varhelyi was quoted as saying.
