The US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim, welcomed today the agreement reached between Albania and Greece regarding the strengthening of border cooperation. Through a post on social media, Yuri Kim assesses the agreement as a positive step.
"Today's agreement between Albania and Greece is a positive step. Better border control strengthens the security of both countries and the region. I look forward to seeing our friends working together to solve common problems," Kim wrote on Twitter.
Greece and Albania have reached an agreement to have a joint border mission to prevent the influx of migrants and trafficking in drugs or illicit goods across the country. The parties have agreed to have a joint center where Albanian and Greek staff will work together, which will be located on Greek side territory. The center is expected to become operational in about a month. In addition to the European agency Frontex, there will be increased border controls on both sides, from both Greece and Albania.
